Eco Monday: A garden fed with coffee

Do you know what a compost is? This mixture of organic materials is an old friend of those who like to plant their own vegetables and fruits in their gardens. It works as a fertiliser so your food can grow without the need of pesticides. In order to create a compost, you need four basic ingredients: carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and moist.

Carbon is easily available in dead leaves and wood shavings while nitrogen can be found in green leaves and vegetable scraps. Well, scientists found out that an ingredient that we have in abundance inside our kitchens can do the job more efficiently: used coffee ground (a great source of both carbon and nitrogen).

So I leave this tip for all you home farmers that will be able to use their "trash" to grow better vegetables and also for the coffee houses, that can donate their wastes to organic farms. Take a look at this video of a couple of friends that created a mushroom farm only using the waste of coffeehouses as their compost source.
